Whispered interpreting
Whispered interpreting is a form of interpretation where the speaker‘s words are translated quietly to the listener. Whispered interpreting is one of the most complex types of interpretation, since the interpreter must provide the translation in a manner that does not disturb the other participants at the event. Usually, this type of interpretation is used when only one or a few listeners in the auditorium need the translator’s assistance. This type of interpreting is most commonly used in court hearings, or during interviews, meetings, conferences and negotiations. When ordering a whispered interpretation, one must consider the following:
- This type of interpreting can only be used for short events, with a duration of less than one hour
- During longer events two interpreters will be needed, and must work in rotation
- It is not recommended for whispered interpreting to be performed for more than two listeners
